Matthew Sweeney nasce a Donegal, in Irlanda nel 1952. Si trasferisce a Londra nel 1973 e ha studiato presso il Politecnico del Nord di Londra e dell'Università di Friburgo. Le sue Raccolte di poesia comprendono poesia "A Dream of Maps" (1981), "A Round House" (1983), "Blue Shoes" (1989), "Cacti" (1992), "The Bridal Suite" (1997) e "A Smell of Fish" (2000). il volume "Selected Poems", che raccoglie il meglio di dieci libri e di 20 anni di lavoro, è stato pubblicato nel 2002.
