Imparare il silenzio

Imparare il silenzio Learning the Silence
Quando i Giapponesi sistemano i fiori, viene preso
In considerazione lo spazio tra i fiori,
la forma dello spazio tra loro.
Ellen Bass
Sei già stata qui, il tuo orecchio insiste,
e tuttavia sai che non è vero,
non v’è nulla su cui contare – nessun vago
borbottio della caffettiera, lontani
tagliaerba misurano tolleranza –
quanto spazio tra piccole irritazioni
che d’abitudine chiamavi quiete
consolanti come vibrazioni
di traffico che cullino cellule di sonno.
All’erta come zinnie, anemoni di mare
tesi al minimo tocco, qui
nel rifugio remoto di questa montagna
le orecchie emettono antenne, un improvviso
messaggio, le orecchie
vuote come conchiglie al richiamo:
Una pigna sul tetto!
Ali di colibrì!
Un picchio tasta la corteccia in cerca d’insetti!
E quel che vi è in mezzo:
silenzio
così sicuro di se stesso
qualsiasi cosa faccia
non lo puoi ignorare, sfuggire.
Dopo, ogni altro suono è tuo.
“When Japanese arrange flowers, the space
between the flowers is considered,
the shape of space between.”
Ellen Bass
You’ve been here before, your ears insist,
though you know it’s not true,
there’s nothing to count on – no vague
perk of the coffee pot, faraway
lawnmowers measuring tolerance –
how much space between small irritations
you used to call quiet
consoling as traffic
vibrations rocking the cells of sleep.
Alert as zinnias, sea anemones
poised for the least touch, here
in this cabin remote on this mountain
your ears put out feelers, any
moment a message, your ears
hollow as shells are on call:
Pine come on roof!
Hummingbird’s wings!
Nuthatch checking the bark for bugs!
And what comes in between:
silence
so sure of itself
nothing you do can
ignore it, escape it.
Whatever sound is next is yours.
