Se solo potessi

Se solo potessi If I Had My Way
Se solo potessi, cara,
tutte queste paure, questa insistente
confusa insoddisfazione sparirebbe,
e ci sarebbero
i prati di una volta
con mucche bianche e marroni,
e quei macigni,
ancora nel ricordo, a segnare
il mondo concreto. Ti
mostrerei queste ridicole,
semplici gioie, le meraviglie
cui continuo a aggrapparmi
per fissare il mondo –
il ruscello, i boschi,
i sentieri, le nuvole, la casa
dove ho vissuto,
con il grande granaio
con l’insegna di mio padre sopra:
FATTORIA DEI QUATTRO VENTI.
Qualsiasi cosa la vita sia
è là.
Tu sei giovane, si
dice, la tua vita
ancora viene a trovar –
mi – il mio onore
la sua scelta. Questo è il posto
in cui viviamo
giorno dopo giorno, per conoscere
l’amore, toccandolo,
per ricominciare
ancora. E guardare su,
questa dolce camera
con i suoi colori, le sue forme,
è diventata –
mentre la mia vita
cerca
te anche,
vuole trascinare
tutto avanti
ma impara a lasciar andare,
lascia che
la tua presenza esista.
Se solo potessi, cara,
per sempre ci sarebbe
un giardino di rose –
sulla vecchia pianola
in salotto
che non hai mai visto ne ora vedrai,
ne mia madre o mio padre,
o tutto ciò che è venuto dopo,
era una vita vissuta,
tutta la fatica, il dolore?
Le morti, le guerre,
le nascite
dei miei bambini? Andiamo
ancora avanti allora –
per te e per me.
If I had my way. Dear
all these fears, these insistent
blurs of discontent would fade,
and there be
old time meadows
with brown and white cows,
and those boulders,
still in mind, marked
the solid world. I’d
show you these ridiculous,
simple happinesses, the wonders
I’ve kept hold on
To steady the world –
The brook, the woods,
The paths, the clouds, the house
I lived in,
with the big barn
with my father’s sign on it:
FOUR WINDS FARM.
What life ever is
stay s in them.
You’re young, like
They say. Your life
still comes to find
me–my honor
its choise. Here is the place
we live in
day by day, to learn
love, having it,
to begin again
again. Looking up,
this sweet room
with its colors, its forms,
has become you –
as my own life
finds its way
to you also,
wants to haul
all forward
but learns to let go,
lets the presence
of you be.
If I had my way, dear,
forever there’d be
a garden of roses –
on the old player piano
was in the sitting room
you’ve never seen nor will now see,
nor my mother of father,
or all that came after,
was a life lived,
all the labor, the pain?
the deaths, the wars,
the births
of my children? On
and on then –
for you and for me.
