I

Lui amava i suoi bambini. Lui mi telefonava due volte al giorno,
lei mi telefonava quattro volte al giorno. Era un così bravo figliolo,
lei era una brava figlia. Lui viveva per la sua famiglia,
lei viveva in ufficio.

I

Out of nowhere two silver birds.
The Twins collapse,
now Ground Zero, a big hole nothing.
After, he says: “you are either with us or against us”.

II

He was a good man, she was a good woman
She wanted the best for everyone, he wanted
the best. He loved his children. He phoned me twice a day,
she phoned me four times a day. He was such a good son,
she was a good daughter. He lived for his family,
she lived in the office. He always cooked me breakfast.
She had such a bright future. He was only twenty-five.
He never said a bad word about anyone, she never spoke
much. She’d only been in this country five years.
He was a good American . She was a good Christian.
He was a good Muslim. He was a good Jew. She was
a good Catholic. She had just had a baby. He had just got married.
She lived with her parents. He was always the first one in the office.
She was always the last one to leave. He was the world’s
best friend, father, son. She was the world’s best mother,
daughter, friend. She was the only daughter I had.
He was the only son I had. She was good. He was good.
She was good. He was good. She was good. He was good.

Ahmed had just left his house when a bomb falls
with pin-point error and wipes out his entire family.
“As this dying land is my witness, I didn’t do anything”,
his arms flailing, his heart full of holes.
Tomorrow nobody will smile.
Zargi sold his daughter for a sack of flour
to someone who came by, lusting after her green eyes.
Now they eat in silence, while metal birds overhead
open their beaks wide and vomit their shiny, piercing sputum
again and again, making all of Afghan land Ground Zero
Here there’s no compensation when you die, not even an audible,
“I’m sorry”. And here I enter this poem myself because I want to
reach in to the world’s blind eye, tear away the veil that separates
us from them and put a name to every man, woman and child
who against all odds keep on building and living on dirt and hope.
